I originally posted this as a comment on Kovu's section, but I think it qualifies such attention as a thread. So let's begin.
Simba and Kovu's characters are pretty well known. Simba, the little cub who just can't wait to be King who grows up into a true King, and Kovu, the exiled heir to Scar, turned teenage killer, but falls in love with Simba's daughter and becomes the new Prince of Pride Rock. Now needless to say, they have gone through traumatizing experiences. But what people don't notice is that they are similar. Their traumatization is similar, as well as their character, and storyarch. Let's list
Simba's traumatic moments -
Watching his father fall to his slow and painful death
Witnissing his dead body, and crying a river of tears.
Scar, his only friend coming to him and emotionally supporting him, (in Simba's mind) while accusing him of the murder.
Simba chooses exile, and runs away, leaving his family behind
Simba passes out in the desert with no food or water for possibly weeks.
Being adopted by Timon and Pumbaa, but still being haunted by his past
Meeting his childhood friend, falling in love, only to argue with her.
This probably made him feel alone in the world.
He returns after seeing his father's ghost, who still loves him
He is nearly killed, probably thinking he deserves it, but then finds out that the sh!t in is life in Scar's doing
Kovu's traumatic moments
Losing his adoptive father Scar, presumably to the hands of Simba. His real father was likely dead, so he was an orphan at heart.
NOTE; Zira is Kovu's mother. Orphan refers less commonly to the loss of one parent.
Being exiled from is homeland, presumably at the age of 6-7.
Choosing a bad lie in a nightmare over death should he even lay a hair on the border.
Meeting a girl who is accepting, playful, and holds no grudges, and loves him for who he is.
Sepaated by Simba and Zira, the latter of which sets him up for excecution, the former, acknowledging that.
His abusive mother spending 3 years beating the living little cub out of him to become a teenage killer.
After forming a relationship his childhood friend, his good side takes over, which brings him to feel the pain of these points I've mentioned, fearing he has the darkness that Scar did.
Feeling he has found his place, the day after, he talks to the "murderer" of his foster father and presumably sees Simba's pain
He sees his friend being attacked by his own mother, and tries to save him, but is knocked out.
When he wakes up he sees his brother dying.
'He is physically abused by Zira, and called out for killing his brother, something Scar has done.
He is exiled from the Outlands, and then later From the Pride Lands. He chooses being alone as life was not fair to him.
A day later, he watches his mother commit suicide (I personally believe that Zira killed herself and the scene was rather censored than deleted) and sighs, losing the parental figures in his life (Scar, Zira, and his bio dad)
Marrying Kiara and accepting Simba as his father in law most likely saved him.
Now it seems a little more similar, doesn't it?
And their basic stories are not too different
A cub (Simba/Kovu) is born under the rule of a monarch, (Mufasa/Scar) and is the chosen successor/son of that monarch
SIDE NOTE; Please do not argue at me over Kovu and Scar's relation. Yes, Scar is Kovu's Adoptive father, but in my eyes, relation is something that does not require blood. So Scar technically is still Kovu's father.
Simba is the son and heir to Mufasa
Kovu is the Adoptive son, protege, and heir to Scar.
That monarch is suddenly killed, which brings emotional burden to the heirs
Mufasa is killed by Scar, which traumatizes Simba, causing him to be overprotective of his offspring
Scar is defeated by Simba, and left for dead to be burned alive and eaten alive by hyenas.
The supposed "murderer" takes the throne and casts out the heir into exile.
Scar banishes Simba from the Pride Lands, emotionally abusing him, and manipulating him into believing he murdered his father.
Simba, carrying that burden, ironically exiles Kovu from the Pride Lands due to his ties to Scar.
The exile has an affect on the former monarch emotionally. They are also put into a mental state, which blind them from the right side.
When Simba is exiled, he meets Timon and Pumbaa who tell him to put his troubles behind. This saves his sanity, but it continues to haunt him.
When Kovu is banished, Zira trains him to become a teenage killer, in order to fulfill her obsession with her former mate, Scar. According to the deleted scene, AND when he encounters Kiara, those teaching had an affect on him.
When they grow up, the monarch is informed to avenge their father's deaths by killing the usurper.
Mufasa convinces Simba to return to Pride Rock and defeat Scar.
Zira trains Kovu to avenge Scar's death by killing Simba.
Both have murderous tendencies at some point.
After discovering that Scar ruined his life, he is almost not hesitant to murder Scar on the spot. What held him back was fearing of being no better than him.
Kovu was willing to kill Simba. His friendship for Kiara was what held him back.
They discover that the loss of their childhoods were the doings of their manipulative cruel, menacing relative
Simba discovers that Scar killed Mufasa and thus, robbed him of having a childhood.
Kovu disowns Zira, and Scar for the matter after realizing he loves Kiara, not caring that he betrayed Scar.
Their childhood friends/love interests are the voices of reason.
Nala attempts to convince Simba to face his past, which makes him question his place'
Kiara's love for Kovu makes him wonder if he is on the right track, and makes him realize he was corrupted.
*Kiara solves all of it*
Kiara is willing to run away from her home in order to reunite with Kovu, and doesn't view him as an Outsider. But as part of her family
Kiara convinces Simba to let go of his hate for Scar's kind by accepting them so that he can emotionally grow up and become King, something which he does.
Also, I believe that Simba and Kovu started to identify with each other as father and son, as they can identify with each other, and relive their childhoods that were lost.
To Simba, Kovu was the son he never had.
To Kovu, Simba was both the father he lost, and the father he never had, more of a father Scar could ever be.
{in the end, their stories are similar, and the outcome would result in them finding their true place in the Circle of Life.
