As of 2015 The Lion Guard has been the newest Edition to the Lion King Franchise. However there has been debate over the show's place in Lion King universe.
SIDE NOTE: Credit to my friend Kieran for his thread "Definitions of The Lion King Canon" for informing me on this comcept. I will be basing this thread off of that one. But let me revap the previous definitions.
TLK = Canon + Official
TLK II = Official + Part of the Official Storyline
Official Storyline = First 2 films. So Kion is not a movie universe character. What is his place?
I remember Kieran telling me on YouTube that the General Universe consists of thr first two films +the spin off TV show. So Kion and The Lion Guard is in the General Universe. So let's go through The Lion King General Universe
TLK --- At the end of The Lion King we see the presentation of Simba and Nala's newborn cub
TLK II --- At the beginning of The Lion King II: Simba's Pride we see the presentation of Simba and Nala's newborn daughter Kiara who is destined to be Queen.
In the film, Kiara explores the Pride Lands and discovers the Outlands near its border. Near the border, she meets Kovu, the son of the leader of the Outsiders for the first time.
TLG --- Simba's son Kion becomes Leader of The Lion Guard tasked with protecting the Pride Lands and defending the Circle of Life.
TLK II --- Sometime after the events of The Lion Guard, Kiara goes on her first hunt where she is reunited with Kovu as an adolescent. After Kovu enters the Pride Lands he falls in love with Kiara.
The Lion Guard is a sequel to The Lion King and takes place during the timline of The Lion King II: Simba's Pride. The Lion Guard takes place after Kiara meets Kovu, but before her first hunt.
However this is in terms with the General Universe where the TV Show is added in the timeline whereas the Official Storyline consists of the only the canon film and the sequel that takes the same form [as a film] excluding any spin off television series
Nevertheless there IS a General Universe and this is the most official version of the timeline without any verification from The Walt Disney Company.
