The Lion Guard sucks, BUT...
I realised after uploading this that I forgot to change the release year from 2015 to 2016 for some of the Lion Guard clips that I featured. Not all of them are from the 2015 pilot episode. Actually only the stampede clips are, while the rest are from some 2016 episodes.
The review in that video was made by the adult me who always makes an attempt to be fair and relatively polite. But in all honesty, the child in me would love to rip Disney a new one. Especially because of that stampede scene in ”Return of the Roar”. Of course I acknowledge that this is nonetheless only a TV show. And that the film(s) will remain brilliant and loved. And thus I will move on from this soon enough - just need to vent for a while.
I thought the false claims of the nonsensical fanfiction theories about murdered/kidnapped/runaway Kopa as "official canon" was bad for the actually official canon. Well, they were/are - but I never in my wildest dreams imagined that Disney itself would some day abuse the canon even worse!
Because among other things "The Lion Guard" is giving us who grew up loving it, a gigantic middle-finger - whether intentionally or not. Especially as this was produced the 20th Anniversary in mind. I mean, I'm sure most of us original fans were expecting something passionate and awesome for such a big anniversary. Something that would acknowledge us, too. There's no excuse for what they did here. If my kids really really really wanted to see ”The Lion Guard” I guess I wouldn't forbid them to, but I would first and foremost introduce them to the original Lion King and its sequel, the story really worth telling, watching and learning from.
I should have watched/read reviews of this show first so I'd known not to throw money at it. But I was so disinterested in a Disney Junior show of The Lion King that I didn't. And then the dvd just sat there conveniently in the discount bin for 7,90€ or something and I thought 'Why not...Though clearly not meant for us original fans, it can't possibly be too bad - after all it is a Lion King series celebrating the 20th anniversary.' Damn it.
I had mixed emotions when I purchased a Kion plush toy. I hated giving Disney any more money for things related to this gawddamn TV show. But at least I bought it from a third-party store so I think Disney didn't get as much money as it would have if I'd got it from Disney Store. I'm a collector and I love Kion's design, except for the stupid tattoo. I just pretend that it isn't there. Sometimes I imagine that it's cub Mufasa, sitting there next to all my cub Simba plushies and my awesome Scamp plushie. Though that's not easy because Mufasa would have had a stronger jaw.
