Simba--the prince of Pridelands, who was very close with his father and thought of his uncle as his friend. After his uncle murdered his father, Simba spent many years in exile, blaming himself for his father's death. Simba is my favorite character not only because he's cute and such a typical, spirited boy child, and is an entertaining mixture of an arrogant, macho rich kid and a kid with a brave and warm heart - but also because he's not your typical Disney hero, who appears perfect from the very beginning. He actually DEVELOPS into the hero he is expected to be. As a child, he has the villain's tendencies in ways of thinking. That's completely fascinating. But knowing he respects his father's values, we don't need to fear that he'd become a villain himself. Check out my character psychology analysis for Simba.

I love how Simba's character develops throughout the movie. Like you said, he doesn't start out as the stereotypically perfect Disney hero. I actually think this makes him easier to relate to. I especially remember one scene in particular having quite an impact on me when I was a child; the scene following the Elephant Graveyard, when Mufasa is angry with Simba about disobeying him, which soon develops into a playful fight and Mufasa telling Simba about the stars. Something about that scene felt so real, and reminded me of the kind of relationship many of us had with our parents when we were little. We wouldn't be perfect, and when we made mistakes our parents would be furious. But only because they care about us; which we're reminded of when Mufasa gets more playful and less serious with Simba. I also like how he is portrayed as the good guy in his battle with Scar. Sometimes in movies, despite how evil the villain may have been during the film, I've still thought that the hero has gone too far when they actually kill the villain. In The Lion King, I never had that issue with Simba. He certainly weakened Scar a lot and showed him who's boss, but it was the hyenas that did the dirty work of actually killing him. And as the hyenas were already evil characters anyway, I thought that worked. I have quite a lot of favourite characters in The Lion King, and while I don't know if Simba is my absolute favourite he is definitely one of my favourites! I'm not always such a fan of the heroes in family movies, but too often the hero is quite bland and lacks depth and personality. Simba, on the other hand, is just awesome.

At IMDB I read someone blaming Simba for letting Scar die and believing that Mufasa would've saved him from the hyenas. I personally don't think either of them would've saved him in that situation.
Both because Scar had proven himself completely untrrustworthy and still murderous and his death would be the only way to protect the family and kingdom. The battle was to death. But I believe Simva left him to dead also because of hate. After all, his hatred of Scar extented into innocent pride members. Of course that is not the original creator's vision but the point is, it's realistic and even likely seeing to what Scar showed him and what Zira was like.
We don't exactly see if he saw the hyenas surrounding Scar but I'd like to believe he did. But then, there is no way either Simba or Mufasa could've saved him from the hyenas even if they had wanted to, because Scar and them were way down there, no time to reach them.
You raise an interesting point there with Simba himself not killing Scar. Perhaps they didn't want to contradict his line "No, Scar, I'm not like you." even though the situation required a kill--but I still believe Simba would've killed him if the fight had turned out differently. Perhaps he hoped the long fall would kill him?
