Kovu--the youngest of Zira's children and the last born before Simba exiled them to the Outlands. He was not Scar's biological son but had been hand-chosen by Scar to become the next king. He's known among the Outlanders as "the Chosen One".
As a child Kovu tried to befriend Simba's daughter Kiara, but he was raised to be a killer and eventually avenge Scar's death and reclaim the throne to the Outlanders, by killing Simba.
But he falls in love with Kiara, which leads him to doubt himself and his task, to struggle between himself and the darkness in him, and eventually to betraying his pride.
Kovu is perhaps my favourite new character of the sequel's. His psychology and character development is the most interesting of them all. (Right after Simba's, but Simba is not a new character.)

When you think about it, not only is Kovu's story dark, but similar to Simba's. A cub is born as the heir to the monarch only to have that role usurped and sent into exile, where he is expected to follow in his father's footsteps and take back the throne. It's not a bare bones completely same story, but it has the same setup. And while there are major differences, there are identical elements. Both cubs have their childhood stolen by their menacing relative, who manipulate them in order to fulfill their purpose. They soon realized that their emotional scars are the faults if their manipulative relatives and retaliate against them still retaining their emotional burden. The exiles themselves are Identical as well. Simba's exile resulted in him being traumatized, bringing enemotional pain, suffering, and wounds. Kovu's exile is in a different fashion. As inplied in the film, he doesn't have a father and Scar took him in, as well as had a connection with him, so Scar's death played a role in Kovu's character. The exile also resulted in the robbing of Kovu's childhood, as now that they are banished Zira abuses him into becoming a teenage killer. It all comes together

Wow, I donvt think I ever thought of that. It must have been intentional from the creators of SP. Like I said in my TLK2 video review on YouTube I've always viewed the movie as a story of Simba and Kovu. That Kiara is just a plot device character.

To me, Simba,Kovu AND Kiara are the main characters. Simba is the focus character since it shows us a glimpse of his psychicology and delves into it. It also shows Kovu's story, of how he lost his adoptive father, leaving his mother to strip him of his childhood. It's also about Kiara attempting to find her place in the Circle of Life and uniting both Prides, and healing her father's emotional wounds as well as Kovu's. So all 3 of them deserve the protagonist role.

Well, that's true. But I think to me she's still a supporting character at most. I feel that her storyarch wasn't written in its full potential and how could it have since it's a 90 minute movie and two other characters' stories have a lot of focus. But I'm not sure, it's been years since I last watched TLK2. However, Kiara has always been my thied favourite character in it, as an individual. The We Are One song and scene is one of my top favourites in it and I named my cat Kiara, after her. (The name suits her too as she's all black whilst the name means "little dark one".) I probably would have named her brother Kovu but I wanted to honour my previous kitty's memory by naming Leopold after him.

I still partially stand by my opinion because she's the one who stops the war at the end. But, I do agree that her storyarch is kinda underused.
