Hello, cubvitanilioness, and welcome to the forums! I personally have never given much interest in that matter but I'd imagine it was physically brutal from the start so that Kovu would toughen up and be able to take on a big lion like Simba in a battle to death. So, I think he mostly trained Kovu to fight, not to hunt or be a king but to fight. It probably was emotionally cruel too as she wanted Scar's blackness into his soul and apparently thought she'd succeeded to get it in there or pull it into the surface if she believed it was there all along.

I always thought Kovu received ambush training. Notice how Kovu sees Simba drinking in the waterhole, and is prepared to attack. If Kiara didn't interrupt him, Kovu would have attack Simba, and possibly overwhelmed him, since Simba had his guard down.
Also, since Kovu teaches Kiara how to hunt, it's logical Zira taught him how to hunt for prey so he isn't hungry when he's on his mission to kill Simba. Finally, Zira could have taught Kovu how to swim evident by his rescue of Kiara in the water.
