What if Timon and Pumbaa never met and only Pumbaa found cub Simba? He certainly would've saved Simba's life like he wanted to as the film is now.
But if it was just Pumbaa and Simba:
Would there be Hakuna Matata? According to Disney's official vision, Pumbaa too knew about the philosophy, but as that is not canon, it wouldn't necessarely be that way.
Would Simba take Timon's place as "the leader"? Simba like Timon had a cocky nature and a habit to steal other's good ideas. But Simba left his true identity behind, perhaps he would've tried to be less dominating and leader-like?
Or would he have left it that much behind? Pumbaa was genuinely caring and interested in Simba and thought of him as a child. Perhaps Simba would've come to trust him enough to reveal his past and they would've become more of an equals as friends and perhaps close to each other because they do share some common characteristics, like bravery and kind heart? (As the story is now, I believe Simba became closer with Timon as they had more common, dominating characteristics.)
Would the parenting joke from TLK1½ actually apply to some extent if it was just Pumbaa and Simba? I think Pumbaa may have tried to care for Simba but Simba wouldn't have let him get that close and do anything because no one could take Mufasa's place in his heart and life.
Would Simba have grown up inside more if he lived with only Pumbaa? Even if they adapted into Hakuna Matata lifestyle to some extent?
Does Timon serve for anything good to Simba? Don't get this wrong--I like Timon and I know he cared about Simba and was a true friend in the end, but I was just thinking if he had anything good and useful to offer to Simba while Simba was growing up?
How different would the story be if Timon wasn't there?
